Do you want to explore ways how, as practitioners, we can feel more embodied?

Would you like to practice interventions on how we can use somatic awareness and movement in our work?

This embodied, experiential workshop welcomes multi-disciplinary professionals who want to develop their somatic therapeutic skills further. Aimed for: Multi-disciplinary practitioners who want to learn how to incorporate embodied, somatic therapy techniques. The professionals include psychotherapists, family therapists, psychologists, doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, counsellors, guidance teachers, teachers, creative arts therapists, social workers, child and youth care workers, support workers, teachers, and holistic well-being professionals.

Since the workshop is experiential, it also aims to support the personal and professional growth of the practitioners. While the focus of this workshop is experiential, the interventions that will be explored and practised are inspired by evidence-based practices in somatic psychotherapy (see Peter Levine, 1997) and the expressive arts therapeutic modalities (see Cathy Malchiodi, 2020). These interventions honour the realization of how “our body keeps the score” (Van der Kolk, 1996) and therefore the main goal of somatic psychotherapy is to change the trauma-related response by paying attention to embodied, bottom-up processes (Levine), since “our body holds the healing” (Malchiodi, 2022).

Our body communicates beyond the words we might choose to utter or keep inside. Thus, the body has a crucial place in our personal and professional communication. In this workshop we will be zooming in on how to get in touch with what our body is trying to tell us. We can explore how bodily sensations and feelings can also be expressed outwardly through words and movement. The creative exercises in the workshop aim to enhance our body awareness, enriching our self-reflexive professional practices. We will practice getting in touch with somatic experiences that can support our therapeutic understanding of what is going on in ourselves and significant relationships and contexts in our personal and professional lives.
